Sales of 100G Telecom Optics are off to a Strong Start in 2016

Suppliers of 100G optical components for telecom applications first reported a sharp increase in demand in Q4 2015 and set new sales records for these products in Q1 2016. Data on shipments of 100G DWDM ports by Huawei, shown in the figure below, illustrates the increased demand.

Huawei shipped more 100G DWDM ports than five of its competitors combined in Q1 2016. Three of these five competitors also reported increased shipments of 100G optics with the remaining two posting seasonal declines, after a strong Q4 2015. Nokia (Alcatel-Lucent) leads the market in shipments of 200/400G DWDM ports.

Significant fraction of the 100G DWDM ports shipped by Huawei in Q1 2016 went to China Mobile, but demand from other customers is picking up as well. Bidding results for Q2 2016 indicate a sharp increase in orders for 100G DWDM ports from China Unicom.

It is interesting that demand for 100G optics from China is setting new records, while the capex of the Chinese service providers is expected to decline by 20% in 2016. Reduced spending suggests that the initial phase of major infrastructure upgrades is reaching completion, but deployments of DWDM optical ports tend to continue for many years after that. Large service providers tend to add capacity incrementally by lighting up more DWDM ports in response to increasing network traffic. Read more

Reports: Demand for Optics in China Continues to Surprise

The scale and speed of infrastructure projects in China is fascinating, whether they are roads, bridges, bullet trains, airports, or optical networking projects. With 120 million households enjoying fiber broadband connections, China is home to half of the world’s FTTH subscribers. More than 50 million of these FTTH connections were added in 2015 and another 40 million customers will be connected this year.

Why Category 6A Should Be Your Cable of Choice.

6a

“More businesses are turning to Category 6A cabling for their network infrastructure,” notes the company. “This decision is primarily being driven by affordable price, high quality, and exceptional performance. THe followings are five reasons why you should choose Category 6A cable for your enterprise applications”:

1. Category 6A supports all data rates up to and including 10GBASE-T.

Category 6A ensures that your installation will be prepared to run all data rates up to and including 10 gigabits per second. Businesses today rely on data-heavy applications like video, wireless, and desktop virtualization, so it’s critical to have a network infrastructure that will support these and future applications.

2. Speeds like 10GBASE-T will soon become common.

It’s expected that common low-cost, mass-market switches will require Category 6A cable before the end of 2016. This is reinforced by industry forecasts that predict 10GBASE-T will soon be the norm.

3. Wireless access point speeds are accelerating.

The growing demands of mobile devices are driving the need for greater bandwidth. Today’s high-end wireless access points can operate around 1.2 to 2.6 Gbps. Seven Gbps WAPs are expected by 2017, and they’ll require 10GBASE-T. Category 6A cabling infrastructure has the capacity to meet these needs.

4. There are no bundle limits for applications like HDBaseT or higher Power over Ethernet (PoE++).

HDBaseT places bundle limitations on Category 5e and 6 due to alien crosstalk. Because Category 6A is designed to suppress alien crosstalk, there are no limitations on bundling with Category 6A. Category 6A cables are also much better at dissipating heat. This makes them perfect to manage the upcoming 802.3bt PoE++ standards since they deliver both 49W and 96W of power to end devices. Due to the higher 96W power running on multiple cables in a bundle, Category 5e and 6 bundle sizes will be limited – Category 6A cables will not be.

5. 10GBASE-T is the low-cost 10 gigabit option.

When comparing prices per gigabit, 10GBASE-T provides a much lower total cost of ownership versus 1000BASE-T. This is driven by increasing switch volumes (which are driving down prices) and the introduction of more LAN on Motherboard (LOM) servers with “free” RJ45 connectivity.

Report: Global Data Center and SDN Market Nearly Doubled Last Year

The global data center and enterprise software-defined networking (SDN) market jumped 82% in 2015 from the prior year, reaching $1.4 billion, according to research and analysis.
“New SDN use cases continue to emerge, and 2015 was no exception with the establishment of the SD-WAN market,” said Cliff Grossner, senior research director for data center cloud and SDN at IHS. “While still a small market, many startups, traditional WAN optimization appliance vendors and traditional network vendors have jumped in, and we forecast SD-WAN revenue to hit $1.3 billion by 2020.”

Growth for SDN-capable Ethernet switches and SDN controllers continues to grow, with early players, pure-play SDN startups and traditional switch vendors gaining traction as customer deployments escalate, the report says.

Regionally, North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific and the Caribbean and Latin America (CALA) were all up in 2015 for data center and enterprise SDN hardware and software revenue.

“This year we look for new deployments of SDN and the scaling up of existing deployments,” Grossner said. “We continue to see vendors add to their SDN-capable products and organize new open source projects, adjusting their businesses to be part of the SDN-driven transformation.

With the data center and enterprise SDN market now looking to open source software and open hardware designs, the number of deployed networking products based on open source is expected to multiply, and open source software for networking will mature as the integration of individual components creates a complete ecosystem.

World cabling market declined 3 percent in 2015

1

In the most recent World Cabling Overview, which it completed in March, the market-intelligence firm declares the global cabling market declined 3 percent in 2015, to $6 billion after 2014’s $6.2 billion in manufacturer selling price (MSP). The market estimation covers 39 countries. When announcing the results, BSRIA commented, “The strong dollar has reduced market values in 2015 in many countries, measured in U.S. dollars, and has therefore expanded the decline to 3 percent.”

BSRIA identifies Russia and Brazil as countries that fared particularly badly last year. “Russia suffered from sanctions and contra sanctions, and from low oil prices,” BSRIA said. “Projects were postponed and fierce competition pushed cabling specifications and prices down.” Meanwhile in Brazil “some unusual large projects were completed in 2014 and early 2015, and the country is in economic and political turmoil after some years with significant growth.”

The China market grew, but at a rate of 2.3 percent in U.S. dollars (3.8 percent in local currency) “after years of significant growth, as the local area networks market suffered from lack of new construction,” according to BSRIA. “The data center segment performed very well, but it was not enough to boost the overall increase.”

In an overall down year, India stood out as a bright spot, increasing by more than 7 percent in U.S. dollars (12.8 percent in local currency), and BSRIA said the country is “expected to continue showing healthy growth in the forecast period to 2018.”

Market Growth Hinges on the Adoption of Next Generation Technologies

Demand for optical connectivity remains strong despite a declining capex of telecom network operators and lower than expected growth in infrastructure spending by cloud companies. Optics takes on a larger share of the connectivity as data rates go up. Increasing complexity of high-speed optics translates to higher product pricing, boosting revenues of component suppliers, while offering cost reductions to end users in terms of dollars per Gigabit of bandwidth.

The spending of the 15 leading network operators is set to drop in 2016. The operators’ guidance on their 4Q15 earnings calls means the Far East will spend less in 2016 and in the case of the Chinese operators, significantly less. The analytics forecast that capex will be down 7% to $178 billion dollars in 2016.
